Minister Shamu, who is also the patron of the Zimbabwe Union of Musicians, performed his new gospel single with Mahendere Brothers, which he dedicated to President Mugabe and entire nation.
The track titled, Jesus Be My Fence, originally composed by American RnB singer Sam Cooke, is a duet by the minister and Amos Mahendere.
In an interview just after the performance, Minister Shamu said:
“We thank the Lord for the visionary leader, Cde Mugabe, and what he has done for our country, and as the track says we are asking the Lord to be a fence and protect us from the evil that might befall us. Such is my prayer to God that he be a fence to our President and entire nation.”
The song was recorded at Clive Mono Mukundu’s Monolio Studios. Michael Mahendere and Mukundu produced it.
The song is part of a compilation album produced by Mukundu which carries songs from various artistes, among them Alexio Kawara, Willom Tight and Outspoken. Titled Various Artistes 4, the album comprises 15 songs by different artistes.
Minister Shamu, a versatile and veteran broadcaster during the liberation struggle, enthralled the audience at the gala with his vocal prowess.
He is an avid follower of music and art as evidenced by a number of projects he has done with local musicians.
A few months ago, the minister helped mobilise funds for Tongai Moyo’s chemotherapy and also assisted sungura musician, Cephas Mashakada, who was diabetic until the time of his death.
He has also assisted newcomers, Amakhosikazi Entuthuko, in recording their latest DVD album Bongani Bongani.
Minister Shamu applauded the Bulawayo audience for showing great respect and coming in their numbers in unity to celebrate.
“This is astounding. It is very close to what I saw at Chibondo in Mount Darwin where the Heroes Splash celebrations were held and I am impressed with the peaceful environment. I have not seen fighting or violence. Keep it up Bulawayo,” he said.
He said the attendance showed the maturity of Zimbabweans.
“The people of Zimbabwe are very clear of what they want, they love their country and they are not driven by issues of tribalism, nepotism. We can see harmony and that is the spirit of unity,” he said.
