The minister, who is also the patron of Zimbabwean musicians commended the organisation’s humanitarian ambassador Alick Macheso for leading a group of musicians with a charity heart.
He said musicians were coming on board to foster a common cause in helping people in need.
“I therefore take this opportunity to salute the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society humanitarian ambassador Mr Alick Macheso for volunteering to host a charity concert to help kick start this support-a-Zimbabwean campaign,” said Minister Shamu in a speech read on his behalf by the ministry’s deputy director urban communication, Mr Collins Mungate.
“As Patron of Musicians in Zimbabwe, I am touched by such a gesture and I also want to congratulate Fungisai, Tryson, King Shaddy, the Dembo brothers and all corporate partners for listening to Red Cross’ call.”
Mr Shamu said the ZRCS had been instrumental in supporting the government to cater for the vulnerable groups and its impartiality in engaging humanitarian work awarding them respect from the government.
“I . . . thank the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society for engaging our local musicians as it seeks to entrench its humanitarian role in Zimbabwe,” said Minister Shamu.
“As an auxiliary to government humanitarian efforts, the organisation’s place in the local humanitarian space is sacrosanct and the fact that it derives its mandate from the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society Act of Parliament Chapter No. 17.08 of 1981 confirms its importance in providing for the vulnerable groups.”
ZRCS president Mr Edison Mlambo said they were committed to partnering the Government on humanitarian projects.
“The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is contributing to the global mission of the Red Cross movement through its programmes.
“As you may be aware, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is not an NGO, but a humanitarian player,” said Mr Mlambo.
“It has a clear mandate to complement government humanitarian efforts and has over the years championed its programmes in an impartial, neutral and independent manner.”
ZRCS will hold a charity concert on May 11 at the Mbare Netball Complex in Harare.
