THE family, relatives and friends of the late Zimbabwe football legend, George “Mastermind” Shaya, will celebrate the life of a legend tomorrow when his tombstone is unveiled at Warren Hills Cemetery where he was buried on August 24 last year.
Shaya, a record five-time Soccer Star of the Year winner, was the talisman for Dynamos during his illustrious career there and also served as the senior national team’s skipper shortly before Independence. He is widely regarded as the country’s finest-ever footballer,
His widow, Agness, revealed that the late “Matermind’s” family and relatives were expecting his former friends, team-mates from Dynamos and other clubs, local administrators and fans alike to join them “in celebrating his life, on and off the pitch” when they unveil his tombstone tomorrow morning (9.30am) where a church service will also be held.
Soon after, all guests will head to the family’s home at Madokero 1 (Stand 13112), a sprawling property that was donated to Agnes a month after George’s untimely death by giant energy institution, Sakunda Holdings, in recognition of his achievements both at club and national level and immense contribution to the game in general.
Agness also extended her gratitude to Sakunda Holdings’ chief executive officer, Kuda Tagwireyi, and his entire staff for the huge assistance they have and are still rendering her following her husband’s passing on.
“I am extremely lost for words at how I should thank Mr Tagwireyi and everyone at Sakunda for all this assistance.
“George would definitely have been over the moon with what they have done for us,” she said.
