SHEASHAM recorded their first home win of the season yesterday when they beat Hwange 1-0 at Bata Stadium.
The Gweru side had failed to win in the four matches they played at the facility since its homologation in May.
Their best results were three goalless draws against Highlanders, Herentals and Ngezi Platinum Stars. They lost 2-0 to Dynamos in the other game. Hwange became their first victim.
Not only had they failed to win, but the Midlands-based outfit were also yet to score in the four matches.
Liberty Masveure’s solitary strike in the second half secured the much-needed win for the construction boys.
“It is a morale booster. Remember, the game of football is a psychological game, and when they see that they are not scoring, it affects them,” said Sheasham coach Lizwe Sweswe after the match.
“I have been telling them (players) that they have to keep believing.
“Now that we have scored, I know they will believe and we will start scoring more goals at home.”
The win puts Sheasham’s points tally at 23 and temporarily moves them out of the drop zone to 14th on the log standings. They are three points above Triangle, who play today.
Sheasham were the first to settle, creating two early chances they failed to convert.
Hillary Bakacheza skied his effort from close range after he was set up by the lively Dinoleen Masukuta.
Masveure then hit the side netting moments later. The construction boys were pegged back in their own half during the second half and had to rely on counterattacks.
They nearly got the opener on the half-hour mark, when Masukuta capitalised on a rare defensive lapse by the coal miners, but his headed effort crashed against the crossbar.
The pressure on both teams to break the deadlock kept building, and it did not take long for Hwange’s defence to give in.
Roy Useni threaded a delightful pass that was met by Masveure, who outpaced the Chipangano defenders, allowing himself space to slot the ball past an out-drawn Nedrick Madeya.
Hwange coach Nation Dube bemoaned the lack of concentration on the part of his defenders for the Sheasham goal.
“We played really well; they tried to attack early in the match, but we were good defensively. It is unfortunate that we lost concentration in the second half and allowed them to get an easy goal,” he said.
