Shift your focus

“GIVE thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

This simple yet profound declaration is not just a call to gratitude, but an invitation to change our perspective. In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, we must learn to look beyond our circumstances and fix our eyes on the goodness and mercy of God.

Gratitude has the power to change our hearts and minds. It allows us to acknowledge God’s presence in our lives, even amidst trials. When we take time to give thanks, we create space for joy and hope to flourish. Psalm 107 is a good reminder that our lives should overflow with gratitude.

Imagine waking up each day with a heart full of thanks, declaring God’s loving kindness over your life.

As we practise gratitude, we cultivate a spirit of joy that becomes our strength. We all encounter situations that threaten to overwhelm us.

Be they personal struggles, health issues or relational conflicts, these challenges can cloud our vision and fill our hearts with fear.

But in these moments, we must deliberately choose to shift our focus. The story in 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 illustrates this beautifully. King Jehoshaphat faced a formidable enemy, one that seemed impossible to defeat. Instead of succumbing to fear, he sought God and appointed singers to lead the people in praise.

They declared: “Give thanks to the Lord, for his mercy and loving kindness endure forever!”

As they began to sing, the Lord moved mightily on their behalf. Their praise became a weapon of warfare, leading to victory without them having to lift a sword.

This teaches us that when we shift our focus from our battles to God’s goodness, we invite His intervention into our situations. Our praise has the power to break chains, silence fear and usher in divine victories.

As we reflect on the power of praise, let us not forget that our songs are declarations of faith. When our hearts are troubled, let us lift our voices in worship, proclaiming God’s faithfulness and love. Imagine the sound of joyful praise rising up from our homes, our churches and our communities.

As we sing, we not only remind ourselves of God’s goodness, but we also encourage those around us. We become vessels of hope, shining light into the darkness.

In this month of November, I challenge you to let your hearts overflow with gratitude and praise. Make a list of the blessings in your life and declare God’s goodness over every situation.

Remember, your circumstances do not define your outcome; God’s mercy does.

In this season, let us be like the singers in 2 Chronicles, boldly proclaiming God’s goodness and inviting His presence into our lives.

May our praise be a weapon against despair and may we experience the transformative power of gratitude.

Together, let us stand firm in the faith that God is good, his mercy endures forever and our victory is assured. Amen.
