Unsettled chanter Shiga Shiga, real name Gift Katulika, has left Energy Mutodi to rejoin Peter Moyo at Utakataka Express.
The Congolese chanter announced his return at President Mugabe’s Inauguration Fiesta last Thursday saying he had returned “home”.“I have come back home where I was moulded to be what I am today,” said Shiga Shiga amid applause from the crowd.
Peter Moyo confirmed that Shiga Shiga had rejoined the group.
“To add is to strengthen. Shiga Shiga is a great chanter. We hope to work with him well,” he said.
Shiga Shiga’s decision to leave Mutodi Express seemed to emanate from Mutodi’s legal troubles that have incapacitated him for months.
Mutodi is facing US$2 million fraud charges and has not staged a show in the past three months.
“Like I have said before, it’s not about me. I work for my family and if I don’t get money, they will starve.
“At any given time I have to make sure that my family is well looked after and that I can afford to live a decent life,” said Shiga Shiga.
“When I feel my livelihood is under threat, I always look for other available options. I cannot afford to stick to someone just for the sake of it,” he added.
“I have three children, all of school-going age, and I believe this is the time for me to improve myself and in the process better the lives of my family. This is common sense,” said Shiga Shiga.
Peter Moyo’s manager, Suko Dube, confirmed that most of Mutodi’s band members had approached him in the wake of uncertainty at Mutodi Express.
“There are guys from Mutodi’s camp that have shown interest in joining us, some of whom we have worked with before. For Shiga Shiga, he is always welcome,” he said.
Shiga Shiga left Utakataka Express early last year saying Mutodi’s offer was “too tempting to ignore”. Mutodi was known for flaunting money in his quest to conquer the music scene. He had more than 30 band members.
