This is the second of Chinodya’s book to be translated into the Teutonic language. The first was an earlier novel Harvest of Thorns.
The German version is called Zwietracht and was translated from English by Dr Manfred Loimeier under the Afrikawunderhorn series.
The brains behind the translation was Indra Wussow, a German woman from Sylt Island who read the book and liked it.
“Out of the blue she got in touch and invited me to their writers’ colony. There they give you full board and an allowance and just let you be.
“If you want to spend the three or so weeks in a drunken stupor then that is up to you. Or you can use the time and the setting to put your creative mind into full gear and produce a literary work,” Chinodya recalls.
Chenjerai Hove’s Bones is another novel by a Zimbabwean author that has been translated into other languages.
While our books are being translated into other languages, the local writers seem to subscribe to the notion that our local languages are dying.
Someone made the observation that not much effort has been made to translate works into Shona and Ndebele or any other local language to promote our languages while making the works more accessible to the local readership.-The Herald
