COMMISSIONER-General of Police Augustine Chihuri urged the team that is set to represent the nation at the eighth edition of the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Corporation Organisation Games (SARPCCO) to be disciplined as they seek to defend their title in Windhoek, Namibia. The Games will be held from August 16 to 30 with 14 countries expected to take part and Zimbabwe are sending a contingent of 195 athletes and officials of which 81 are females.
Participants at the Games will compete in athletics, chess, darts, football men and women, netball, volleyball men and women and tennis.
Comm-Gen Chihuri was speaking during a send-off and official sponsorship handover ceremony from various companies including Mbada Diamonds, CBZ and Cottco for the team at Morris Depot yesterday.
He was the guest of honour.
The Zimbabwe team is expected to fly out to Namibia tomorrow.
Comm-Gen Chihuri also urged the team to defend the title they won in the Democratic Republic of Congo two years ago.
“It is important to note that any reputable sporting activity is a function of discipline and commitment. It is this discipline that instils and fashions the requisite temperament, attitude and skill that makes for competent, competitive and winning sports persons,” said Chihuri.
The Commissioner-General of Police said the team knows what is expected of them at the Games.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police are the defending champions after having won the trophy during the last edition of the Games in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2011. The team will participate at the coming eighth edition of the Games in Windhoek, Namibia with the realisation of the expectations upon them. I am told that the organisers were fully aware of the need for thorough preparation in order to ensure that the participants perform to expectation. In this respect, the participants were in camp honing their skills under the watchful eye and technical guidance of their coaches and trainers,” said Comm-Gen Chihuri.
The ZRP boss expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their support of the team as different companies came on board.
“I am happy that the cordial relationship between the organisation and well wishers both corporate and individuals had developed quite firmly over time. The organisation therefore highly values the support from our stakeholders.
“Indeed, it is this support that has given our athletes the requisite inspiration, motivation and fortitude to excel. The support from our stakeholders therefore contributes to the raising of the country’s flag,” he said.
Mbada Diamonds sponsored the team with tracksuits, t-shirts, caps, satchels and they also promised to give US$200 to each member of the team that wins a gold medal while Cottco weighed in with US$16 500, CBZ US$10 000 and other companies that came in to support are Doves, Sakunda, Lunar Chickens, Moonlight, Sam Levy, Elkhart Mine, Zinara, ZTA, AVM Africa, Rockshade, Badger Commandant, Tynserv Distributors, Paron Vista and Ranishaw.
