Shot ‘robber’ remanded in custody

A MAN from Kezi who was shot when he tried to rob a local supermarket of property worth $160 000 yesterday appeared in court.

Agrippa Moyo (31) of Stella City Mine Compound was with an unidentified accomplice who is still at large when they allegedly tried to steal from two trucks that were carrying cement and groceries parked in front of Cool Land Trading Supermarket.

The supermarket was saved from the loss by a Nokel Security company guard who was at the scene when the offence was committed.

Moyo was not asked to plead to attempted robbery when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Nomasiko Ndlovu.

Moyo came to court walking with the aid of crutches and pleaded with the magistrate to grant him bail, saying he was not well and would need assistance from time to time.

The State represented by Mr Denmark Chihombe opposed Moyo’s request stating that he would abscond trial due to the nature of the offence if he is granted bail.

“Your worship, the State is opposed to the accused person being granted bail as there are chances that he might abscond trial. When he was arrested, he tried to escape and that is the reason why he ended up getting shot. At the same time, he is facing a serious offence which might warrant a heavy sentence. He is likely to abscond trial given these reasons,” he said.

Moyo was remanded in custody to today for bail ruling.

Mr Chihombe said on September 18 this year at around 3AM, the security guard was on night duty guarding Cool Land Supermarket when Moyo and his accomplice allegedly connived to steal from the two trucks.

“The accused person and his accomplice proceeded to the two trucks which were full of groceries and cement. On arrival, the duo noticed that there was someone watching over the place,” he said.

Moyo allegedly approached the security guard armed with an okapi knife intending to stab him in the head.

The security guard allegedly fired three shots towards Moyo and he sustained injuries.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Moyo’s arrest before he was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for medical treatment. @zinyuke98
