A member of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Innocent Benza has called on Government to prioritise grassroots development as it is the bedrock for national sports success.
Speaking during an interface workshop between the Parliamentary Portfolio on Sports and the Sports Ministry, Benza urged the Government to play a leading role in promoting the participation of young talent.
“If the stories of young people who are doing wonders in sport are publicised, this can encourage and motivate other girls and boys to join such activities,” said Benza.
“I am proud that we have Beloved Biza who is playing cricket at international level, as well as Winnie Mapuwa who was the youngest player at the COSAFA Cup.
“We need to take advantage of such situations, take them on board, talk to them and make sure that everyone knows that these are the young people doing well.
Benza said without a structured approach to finding young stars, sports could die.
