IT will be showtime again this morning when some of Harare’s finest young talent reconvene at Heritage School for Match-day 7 of the ProBhora League.
This football festival, whose start was timed to coincide with the five weeks of the April-May school holidays, has not just been a hive of activity, but also an entertainment galore.
And the opening seven match days have not been short of goals either. Just on Wednesday at the same venue, log leaders Legends Football Academy ran amok, hammering BN Academy 9-0.
Striker Nickson Mandaza led the rout with a hat-trick while Nokutenda Chikupo and Denzel Chakaza weighed in with a brace each and Darell Muusha and Blessing Zhou added one apiece
Star winger Chakaza completed a man of the match performance by contributing three assists before grabbing two of his own.
Scorpions edged RSA 3-2 via goals by Dylan Chiripanya and Valentine Muzadzi’s double.
RSA replied through Calvin Kadembo and Takunda Katiyo.
Second-placed Aces Youth Soccer Academy edged Athlete Sphere 2-1 with Gregory Mutema’s double handing them victory while Elton Chitoko had pulled one back for Sphere.
Tafadzwa Mulambo and Blessd Jangano found the target as Total Academy beat Heritage 2-1.
After witnessing a near flawless inaugural season, the ProBhora League organisers have been purring.
“What has set this league apart in the Zimbabwean football landscape is not just the talent on the pitch but the meticulous, ‘pro-style’ calendar designed to push the country’s elite cadets to their absolute limits,’’ the league chiefs said in a statement.
“The Holiday blueprint, the league’s primary innovation lies in its scheduling. By condensing the first seven matchdays into the April school holiday, organisers have successfully removed the traditional barriers of school commitments and travel restrictions.
“For the first time, coaches have had 100 percent squad availability, ensuring the highest possible standard of competition.
“This strategic window allowed for a gruelling ‘Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday’ rhythm’’.
By mirroring the high-frequency schedules of the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League, ProBhora is teaching its players lessons that a standard once-a-week game cannot be sustainable in an era when FIFA and their confederations, who include CAF and UEFA are regularly increasing the games in continental inter-club competitions.
“In the science of recovery, players are learning that what they do off the pitch – nutrition, hydration and sleep – is just as vital as what they do on it.
“Elite mentality, navigating back-to-back fixtures requires a psychological toughness and a “next game” focus found only in professional set ups.
“During the league tactical depth has also been on show. With little time between matches, players must adapt quickly to new scouting reports, fostering a higher football IQ,” the league said.
When schools re-open for the second term, the ProBhora League will take a mid-season break to allow for players to fully focus on their academics.
“While the league takes a competitive hiatus in June and July, the work does not stop . . . this period is specifically designated for the ProBhora pathway initiative.
“For the standout performers of the first seven rounds, these two months are a golden window for trials and placement opportunities with professional clubs.
“For the eight participating academies, June and July serve as a tactical lab as it also affords the coaches with a chance to revamp the league.
“Coaches will dive into the data from the first half of the season to address technical weaknesses, ensuring that the level of play evolves before the second half-kicks off in the August school holidays’’.
There are also indications that the league will expand its reach.
“While the senior cadets regroup, the spotlight will shift to the younger ranks with dedicated focus on Under-9, Under-11, and Under-13 development. Furthermore, high-stakes Under-15 and Under-17 tournaments will be staged, ensuring the pipeline of talent remains robust and active all year-round,’’ ProBhora said.
