Shumba pleased after setting personal best

ZIMBABWE’S representative at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Pamela Shumba, says she is pleased with her performance despite failing to progress to the semi-final of the women’s 100m T12.

Shumba came fourth in Heat One, Round One, yesterday, at the Olympic Stadium, in 15.43 seconds.

She set a personal best, improving her previous time of 15.88 seconds.

There were four heats lined up for the women’s 100m T12, with the first in each heat, and the next four fastest, advancing to the semi-finals.

“It was a fair race. I will not be progressing to the semis but I am happy because I managed to improve my time.

“When I was discussing with other athletes I learnt that they do sport as their full-time job,” said Shumba.

The heat was won by Ukraine’s Oksana Boturchuk, in 12.04 seconds, who came in as the favourite.

She was followed by Yanfen Liang, of China, in a time of 12.39 seconds.

In third place was Paraguay’s Melissa Nair Tillner Galeano, in 14.77 seconds, which was also her personal best.

Zimbabwe will now shift focus to Vimbai Zvinowanda, who is scheduled to compete in the 200m T47, on Saturday morning.

They are the only two local athletes, at the Games, after they qualified earlier this year, at a qualifying event, in Dubai.
