A FUGITIVE man from Zvishavane who has been on the run for five months after allegedly committing a gruesome murder in Shurugwi has appeared in court facing a count of murder.
The man, Prosper Zindiro whose age was not given last week, appeared before Shurugwi resident magistrate Mrs Sithabile Zungula charged with the murder of Terrence Mhere .
He was not asked to plead.
Ms Zungula remanded Zindiro in custody and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
For the State, Ms Bertha Bore told the court that on a date unknown to the State but in January this year, Zindiro and his three other accomplices, Breadwinner Mudzingwa, Lloyd Jinja and Darlington Mangoma went to Chimona Mine in Shurugwi armed with Okapi knives, machetes and a whip made of wire.
The court heard that on arrival they met Terrence Mhere and demanded gold from him.
“They met the now deceased and demanded gold from him. Mhere told them that he did not have any gold and this did not go down well with the quartet and a misunderstanding ensued,” she said.
Ms Bore said the gang assaulted Mhere and left him lying lifeless.
“They took turns to assault the deceased with machetes before stabbing him several times all over the body and fled the scene. Zindiro ran out of luck, and was arrested at a shebeen at Mazuwa Business Centre while drinking beer with his friends. His three accomplices are still at large,” she said.
