A 38-year-old Shurugwi man allegedly raped his neighbours’ 10-year-old daughter once while his wife watched. Daniso Sibanda of Ruzive Village, Chief Banga in Shurugwi, the court heard, first had unprotected sex with his wife in their bedroom while the complainant, a Grade Five pupil, watched.

With his wife’s permission, Sibanda allegedly went on to rape the girl once without using protection. Sibanda appeared before Gweru regional magistrate Mr Morgan Nemadire facing one count of rape.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to Tuesday next week for trial. The prosecutor, Mr Kelvin Guvheya, told the court that sometime in February, Sibanda was resting in his bedroom when his wife, in the company of the complainant, entered.

Mr Guvheya said Sibanda got up from the bed and told his wife that he wanted to be intimate with her while the minor watched. The court heard that after the couple finished having sexual intercourse, Sibanda told his wife that he was now going to have sexual intercourse with the minor.

Mr Guvheya said Sibanda turned onto the complainant and forcibly removed her undergarments and allegedly raped her once without using protection while his wife (age and name not given) watched. He said after the rape, Sibanda and his wife ordered the complainant to go back to her homestead.

“The matter came to light when the complainants’ mother noticed that her daughter was experiencing some difficulties in walking before she interrogated her,” said Mr Guvheya. “The complainant went on to narrate her ordeal, before the matter was reported to the police.” It was not said in court why Sibanda’s wife was not arrested for aiding her husband to allegedly rape the Grade Five pupil.
