Government has made significant progress on the Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road, completing over 30km of the 43km stretch, thanks to a partnership with local construction company, Road Trackers Construction (RTC).
The partnership is part of a broader effort to upgrade roads nationwide.
Under the Second Republic, infrastructure development is a top priority, and the upgraded Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road is expected to boost cargo movement and travel on the southern corridor, driving productivity and sustainable growth.
The US$41 million contract encompasses the construction, upgrading, and widening of the road, which serves as a crucial link between Beitbridge Border Post and major towns like Gweru, Kwekwe, and Chinhoyi.
The Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road is a vital economic artery, poised to accelerate growth in the Midlands Province’s GDP.
Its strategic importance extends to connecting key border posts, facilitating trade and commerce.
Infrastructure development remains a top priority under the Second Republic, which aims to increase production across all sectors for sustainable economic growth.
Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, led villagers, motorists, and Government officials through the completed stretch, which is at the Mhandamabwe turn-off along the Masvingo-Zvishavane Highway, now open to traffic.
In an interview, Minister Ncube commended the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa for availing funds for the road’s reconstruction.
“We are here to see the progress made, and I commend the Second Republic as well as the contractor for ensuring that funds were put to good use.
“Now we will be linking Boterekwa and Mhandamabwe, which is a positive development for the province,” he said.
Minister Ncube said the reopening of the road is a crucial catalyst for increased transport movement along the southern corridor.
He noted that, a decade ago, transport operators often bypassed this route, leaving villagers with limited options.
“For years, this road was giving motorists challenges, affecting trade for businesses along this road.
“But that is now a thing of the past, thanks to the leadership of President Mnangagwa,” he added.
Midlands Provincial Road Engineer Stephen Kamutema reported significant transformations along the road.
“To date, we have opened 30km to traffic. The rest of the road will be opened upon the commissioning of the entire project,” he stated.
Shurugwi South Constituency legislator, Cde Wilson Mhuri, praised the Second Republic for driving transformative projects that prioritise people’s needs.
He highlighted the road’s rehabilitation as a prime example of the Government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises.
“This development will significantly impact the district, saving lives and boosting economic activities.
“The road rehabilitation project is expected to create jobs, stimulate business growth, and improve accessibility.
“With the Government’s focus on people-centred projects, communities like Shurugwi can look forward to enhanced livelihoods and opportunities,” said Cde Mhuri.
