Shurugwi miners have raised about $20 000 towards donations to the victims of cyclone Idai which ravaged the eastern and southern parts of the country, killing over 100 people leaving hundreds of families displaced. Shurugwi District Administrator Mr Langton Mpeta said the miners have since handed over the donations to him.
He commended the miners for showing support to the Government cause by donating
“We are very happy that the miners in Shurugwi have also taken heed of the Governments’ call for us to donate towards national disasters such as this. We know miners are always in the bush doing their job but they have found time to organise themselves and donate $20 000 towards the cyclone Idai victims,” he said.
Mr Mupeta said he will be handing over the donations to the provincial minister’s office.
“I have told the miners that we have to go together and hand over the donation to the Minister’s office. The donation will complement what the district has already donated,” he said.
A member of the Shurugwi Miners donation committee Mr Nicholas Gara said they were still receiving more donations from various miners operating in the town.
“We initially set a target of raising $15 000 towards the cyclone Idai victims as Shurugwi miners. We have however surpassed that target and are still receiving more donations,” he said.
Meanwhile, hordes of people from across the Midlands province have been coming to Zimpapers Gweru office to drop their donations since the call to donate through the Zimpapers offices across the country was made. Zimpapers Gweru office Business Development Officer Mr Micah Zinduru said people were still walking in their numbers to drop their donations. “The kind of support and unity shown by the people of Zimbabwe is amazing, daily, we have people who come and drop their donations in various forms through our office,” he said.
