Sibanda’s European excursion

ETHAN SIBANDA is having the time of his life in Europe and does not miss home at all. But then why would he?

After all the 14-year-old is amongst his peers on tour in Europe under an International Tennis Federation/Confederation of African Tennis program.Sibanda, younger brother to Zimbabwe Davis Cup player, Mehluli, is among six African players touring France, Netherlands and Germany.

He was selected following some top performances at the recent African Junior Championship in Tunisia. They are expected back home on August 15, but his father Tendai, says the boy is having a ball, in Europe. Thoughts of home are foreign to the young lad.

“Home is home at the end of the day,” said Tendai Sibanda with a loud laugh.

“I have been talking to him and he tells me he is enjoying his time, and does not really miss home. However, he says it’s been tough on the court, he is struggling to get to the third round.

“Something that is understandable because most of his opponents had great preparations, they are probably home-schooled or learning online so that they focus more on tennis.”

The 51-year-old father has sacrificed a lot for the dreams of his tennis-loving children.

“I have nine kids, all but one are into tennis. I have done my best to help my children despite no background in playing tennis.”
