Sign language a must for teachers

PRIMARY and secondary school teachers are now expected to be competent in sign language as authorities mull making the subject examinable.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister, Edgar Moyo, said teachers should be equipped to cater for the needs of various classes of students.

“In the competence based education curriculum, the Zimbabwe sign language is one of the indigenous languages to be used as the medium of instruction for the deaf. It must be taught as a learning area like any other language”, he said.

“Accordingly, teachers are expected to be proficient in the Zimbabwe sign language and to specialize just as with other indigenous languages.

“Ideally, every teacher should be ready to accommodate any learner as Zimbabwe sign language is examined in its own right.”
