IN the heart-pounding opening match of the Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10 yesterday, the stage was set for heroics, and the indomitable Sikandar Raza rose to the occasion! With a display of sheer brilliance, Raza led the Bulawayo Braves to a historic 49-run victory over the Harare Hurricanes at the Harare Sports Club.
The 37-year-old all-rounder showcased his extraordinary skills with both bat and ball, leaving fans in awe of his talent. Batting first, the Bulawayo Braves set a challenging target of 128/9 in their 10 overs.
Raza emerged as the tournament’s first half-century scorer, smashing a breathtaking 61 runs off just 30 balls. Alongside him, Ben McDermott provided crucial support with 18 runs off 11 deliveries.
Harare Hurricanes struggled to keep up with the Braves’ formidable performance. Their bowling ace, Brandon Mavuta, impressed with figures of 3/25, and young Tinotenda Maposa almost bagged a hat-trick, ending with figures of 2/30 in two overs. Nandre Burger, with two wickets to his name, added to the Hurricanes’ efforts.
However, it was Raza who proved to be the game-changer with the ball. Leading the charge for the Braves, he astounded everyone with his impeccable bowling skills, finishing with figures of 3/12 in his two-over spell. His teammate, Tymal Mills, also contributed significantly, taking two wickets for just 12 runs in his two overs. Tanaka Chivanga and Taksin Ahmed joined the wicket-taking spree, each claiming one wicket.
The Hurricanes’ chase fell short as they managed only 79/9 in their allotted 10 overs. Mohammed Nabi, their top scorer, showed some resistance with 22 runs off 14 balls, while Luke Jongwe contributed 20 runs off 10 deliveries before falling prey to the relentless Braves attack.
Raza’s exceptional all-round performance earned him the well-deserved title of Player of the Match, a first-of-its-kind honour in Zimbabwe. The grand opening ceremony that preceded the match further added to the excitement, setting the stage for a riveting eight days of fast-paced 10-over cricket in Zimbabwe’s first international franchise league.
In the second match of the day, under the dazzling lights of Harare Sports Club, the Durban Qalandars seized an edge-of-the-seat victory, defeating the Cape Town Samp Army by eight runs in a thrilling last-over encounter. Tim Siefert’s explosive 49 runs off 22 balls earned him the Player of the Match accolade for a truly brilliant performance with the bat. By the time of going to press, Raza and the Bulawayo Braves were back in action against the Johannesburg Buffaloes. You can read the match report on www.chronicle.co.zw.
