Media reports over the weekend said Silengane had attempted suicide after she could not stomach the humiliation she was subjected to over the match fixing scandal after she was suspended from then Referees Committee on allegations of corruption.
“It pains me for people to suggest that I can take my precious life over the ongoing investigations. I have no reason to even contemplate taking my own life over such matter, I have been suspended and the process should come to its logical conclusion. I never attempted to take my life, never at all,” said Silengane during an interview with Chronicle Sport yesterday.
She alleged that the masterminds of the suicide debacle were bent on tarnishing her image as they know that she was innocent and will be proven so when the investigations are concluded.
Silengane admitted that she had severe diarrhoea and had to be taken to Mater Dei Hospital on Saturday for treatment but “I was only there for less than two hours and it had nothing to do with suicide”.
A source at the hospital told this publication that any patient who comes to the hospital on suspicions of suicide will have his or her card clearly written ‘Para suicide’ on top, something which was not on Silengane’s card.
“It is ridiculous and preposterous that I should kill myself over the match-fixing scandal because I know that I am innocent and there is life after football. Why should I leave my children alone because of this case?” said Silengane when asked by our weekly sister paper.
She said it was puzzling that she could decide to take her life now when she has been suspended all along, saying it was normal for people to get sick as some have been known to seek healing from the Nigerian prophet TB Joshua, in apparent reference to the Zifa president Cuthbert Dube, who was spotted a few months back seeking the prophet’s help.
The on going local match-fixing allegations, especially in the Central Region has seen the suspension of former Fifa referee, Cosmos Nyoni, Southern Region chairman, Gift Banda and his Central Region counterpart Patrick Hokonya by the Dube led board. Banda has since laid criminal defamation charges against Nyoni and the case is still pending at the Bulawayo magistrates courts.
