Silobela man arrested for fatal stabbing over torch

A 22-year-old suspected artisanal miner from Silobela has been arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing a fellow miner following a dispute over a borrowed torch.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson,Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the arrest of Lifa Matare (22) in connection with the murder of Joseph Dube (19), which occurred on Saturday at around 8:30 PM at Makende Business Centre in Silobela.

“The now deceased, Joseph Dube, his brother Pride (23), and the suspect, Matare, were drinking beer at Makende Business Centre when an argument ensued over Matare’s failure to return Joseph’s torch, which he had borrowed,” said Insp Mahoko. He said the situation escalated, and Matare allegedly drew a homemade knife from his waistband and stabbed Joseph several times all over the body.

“Joseph fell to the ground, and Matare fled from the scene. A report was made to the police, who attended the scene and ferried Joseph to Silobela Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Insp Mahoko. He said Matare has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations. .
