Sing Along Gig sizzles

enjoy part of the show in the comfort of their homes.

The  first four hours (8-12:30am) were beamed live on ZBCTV, courtesy of a partnership between Chipaz Promotions, Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association, Goldtech Electronics and the national broadcaster.

Suluman Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah, Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso gave a good account of themselves. All eyes where inevitably on Macheso who lost three key band members – Obert Gomba, Jonas Kasamba and Noel Nyazanda. The sungura kingpin silenced critics with a polished act that won the hearts of many. He churned out hits such as “Shedia”, “Monalisa”, “Tafadzwa” and “Macharangwanda” much to the delight of fans.

Macheso has since replaced the “rebel” Gomba with the equally talented Givemore Chokumanyara. However, Macheso decided to do away with chanting as dancer Selemani Mpochi, popularly known as Majuice, failed to measure up to the task.

Macheso also showed his versatility as he exhibited his guitar strutting skills on the song “Chikopokopo” and joined legendary Oliver Mtukudzi on the dance floor. Jah Prayzah also showed why promoters are jostling for his signature.

Like a true soldier, the “Sisiriya” hitmaker commanded his troops with authority. He belted his party songs “Gochi Gochi” and “Tsviriyo” which were popular with the fans. Fans went into frenzy throughout his performance. His group, the Third Generation, showed well choreographed drills.

Suluman took the opportunity to celebrate his 31st birthday on stage. His wife Linda was on hand to han over the cake during a break in his performance. The birthday boy did not disappoint as he also give a fine performance.

The legendary Mtukudzi surprised his fans when he brought a full band with backing vocalists and keyboardist and what a pleasant performance he gave. The mature audience in the crowd seemed to enjoy every second when “Samanyanga” as Mtukudzi is fondly known took to the stage. Mtukudzi was making a reunion with his local fans after a long absence. It was indeed the rebirth of the “big four” musicians in the country.

Partson Chimbodza of Chipaz Promotions, who organised the Sing Along Gig, said they will be many more such shows. He thanked fans for turning out in their numbers.
