UPCOMING Zim hip hop artist, Jonathan “Supernova” Chagonda, has vowed to fight the negative perception against the genre.
He has vowed to use hip hop to spread gospel music and enforce Christian values.
The 27-year-old said he wants to demystify negative perceptions associated with the genre.
“I want to promote and preach about the Kingdom of God through the hip hop genre.
“I am trying to redefine the hip hop genre from being a genre that propagates social ills.
“It is believed that secular hip hop is defined as the voice of sex, rebellion and immorality so my goal is to remove that perception that hip hop promotes the abuse of drugs and indecency,” he said.
Supernova’s musical journey started when he was a mere teenager in Harare, where he wrote songs as a greenhorn, which he would perform at Scripture Union functions.
“Music is a powerful tool that can be used to reach out to many young people who are struggling with various challenges.
“So, I believe using a genre that relates to them is key, which explains the rationale behind gospel hip hop.
“I recently dropped a single – Elshaddai Adonai, which I collaborated with US-based singer Hozay Ghostman.”
Having been exposed to the music of Mudiwa Hood and Flame B, at a young age, he ventured into writing gospel hip hop songs.
In 2017, he dropped his first single entitled, I Praise Him before he released another single, Taste and See, featuring Hey Chandapuwa aka Dr Hololo, in 2020.
In February 2021, he released a third single entitled, Angels & I” featuring EMJ.
He is currently working on a new single titled Backdrop for Your Artwork, featuring contemporary artist, Terry Gee, with the help of Zwil from Rochester, New York, United States.
