A talented poet and performer Nomqhele Sisa Nkomo aged 20 will be sharing her soul-stirring words with the audience on April 25, at Alliance Française, Bulawayo Branch.
Her performance, centered around the theme “Shades of Blue,” promises to be a powerful exploration of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and the struggles of self-acceptance.
Sisa’s journey as a poet began at the tender age of 14, when she started writing as a way to express her emotions.
“I started writing poetry at the age of 14 as a way to express my feelings about things I couldn’t talk about,” she recalls. “It was my escape, my sanctuary. Poetry allowed me to process my emotions, to make sense of the world around me.”
Over the years, Sisa has honed her craft, competing in poetry slams and performing at various events. Her talent has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by her award for Outstanding Poet at the prestigious PRACA event.
“Winning the award was a surreal moment for me,lt validated all the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my craft, and it’s a constant reminder that my words have the power to impact others. It’s a responsibility I take seriously, and it drives me to continue creating work that is honest, raw, and relatable.”she said .
This year’s performance promises to be an emotional rollercoaster, as Sisa delves into the complexities of growing up with a creative mind.
“The audience can expect an exhilarating performance, filled with a whole rollercoaster of emotions, focusing on the good, the bad, and the ugly,” she hints.
“I want to take them on a journey of self-discovery, to explore the highs and lows of mental health, and to find solace in the fact that they are not alone.”
For Sisa, this performance is not just about sharing her poetry, but also about creating a sense of connection with the audience.
“As someone who has been performing for a while now, you’d think that it’s gets easier, but really it doesn’t,”
“But at the same time, the challenge is always something you are excited to take on. It’s a thrill that never gets old, and it’s what keeps me going.”
