SIX people died on Friday night after a Toyota Ipsum they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.

Of the seven passengers, six died on the spot while one was admitted at Gweru General Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital for post-mortem.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said, “Six people died in a road traffic accident which occurred on September 23 at around 2130 hours.

“A Toyota Ipsum was travelling along Harare-Bulawayo Road with seven passengers on board, on approaching the 340km peg; the driver encroached on to the lane of an oncoming vehicle resulting in a side swipe.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road to the left and overturned before landing on its roof resulting in six people dying on the spot.” Names of the victims are yet to be released because their next of kin are still to be advised.

In another accident, a man died yesterday morning near Zindoga Shopping Centre in Harare after a truck he was driving veered off the road and plunged into a stream.“Police urge motorists to exercise caution when driving on the roads to avoid loss of lives,” said Chief Supt Nyathi.
