SIX karatekas will represent Zimbabwe when they take part at the JKS Shotokan Karate World Championships in Brazil from August 14-25.

The team qualified at the Southern Africa selection tournament in South Africa in May.

Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, Lovemore Mutune, Lucky Dube, Zvikomborero Moyo, Lanceburg Mawachi and Aiden Ziwira made the cut.

Juliet Whitaker is also listed in the squad released by the team management.

Coaches Shepherd Ziwira and Natalie Toweel are happy with the build up to the championships and said preparations were going well.

“We are glad to be sending representatives to a big karate tournament in Brazil.

“The six qualified in South Africa in May,” Ziwira said.

The team will use the annual Kwekwe Karate Tournament on August 1 as a final warm-up.

Ziwira said the squad was still seeking funding to cover costs for the trip.

“We are still facing challenges securing sponsorship but we are preparing seriously and hoping to get support.

“We expect to do well,” he said.

The Brazil championships will bring together top Shotokan practitioners from across the world.

It will also offer Team Zimbabwe with a chance to gauge their success.
