A senior police officer was recently assaulted by six miners after he tried to stop them from beating up his sons, the court heard on Wednesday.
Mathew Maveto (33), Finish Chitau (37), Simbarashe Chiketa (32), Tinaishe Kushupa (41), Douglas Mateyesanwa (25) and Tanatswa Mukwenya (22) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Manase Musiiwa on charges of assaulting Chief Superintendent Mukoki Kureva and his two sons — Jameson and Carlton.
The six were denying the charges.
Mr Musiiwa deferred the matter to February 5 for trial continuation and freed the suspects on bail.
It is alleged that on October 27 last year, the six hired Jameson to ferry them to Chitungwiza for a soccer match.
The court heard that they paid $105, including the return trip.
After the match, they got into the vehicle and Jameson passed through Machipisa to drop his brother Carlton.
It is alleged that a misunderstanding ensued between Jameson and the accused persons after they demanded to know why he had diverted from their route without consulting them.
Upon arrival at Mastones Business Centre, Highfield, the six allegedly started assaulting Jameson and Carlton.
The court heard that during the scuffle, Carlton managed to escape and called his father Mukoki for assistance and he rushed to the scene.
On arrival, Mukoki tried to engage the accused persons and they turned their attention on him and also beat him up.
