Siyaso defies lockdown

When The Sunday Mail visited Mbare Thursday, scores of traders were milling around their stalls at “Siyaso”, defying the ban.

The traders sat in groups as they chatted and played cards, awaiting business opportunities.

Those that were passing through the market were being accosted by the traders.

Since the “Siyaso” market was not re-classified, the traders were always on the lookout for police.

Among the items on sale were building materials, timber and other household goods.

The traders said they were desperately trying to fend for their families.

“As you are aware, we are not supposed to be here. Hunger is forcing us to defy the ban. This is our only source of livelihood. I have a family to feed and I have no choice but to come down here,” a trader who identified himself as John said.

According to the traders, the lockdown has forced the prices of their products to drastically fall.

“I need money to buy food and as a result, I have to reduce the price of my products so as to attract customers. I don’t mind the loss, as long as I bring food to my table,” added John.

Before the lockdown, John was selling a 200-litre steel drum for US$4O. He is now selling the same drum for as little as US$15.

A handful of vendors who were selling mostly cigarettes were also among those that were selling their wares at the popular market.

An estimated 6 000 people occupy stalls at “Siyaso”.
