SIZANE High School won the senior girls’ category chess tournament at the weekend. Gifford High School won the boys’ at the championships held at Christian Brothers’ College (CBC).Sizane came first with 4,5 points out of five while Mpopoma were second with Northlea High School finishing third out of 21 schools.
Sizane had the likes of Nomalungelo Mathe in the team who represented Zimbabwe in Romania in 2012.
In the junior girls’ category, Montrose High School came first while Usher came second and Founders were third.
Gifford High School won the senior boys’ category with a perfect score of five points out of five.
Sizane came second while Mzilikazi High School came third out of 19 teams that participated in the category.
In the junior boys section, the hosts CBC came first also with a perfect score of five out of five while Gifford and Mpopoma High Schools were second and third respectively.
Meanwhile, this weekend the Bulawayo Chess Association will play host to the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) Open.
The registration fee is pegged at $5 for adults, $2 for secondary school pupils and $1 for the development section which are primary school kids.
The winners of the tournament will walk away with $200 while runners up will receive $100 while third place will take home $60.
