Zanu-PF has warned the private media to desist from its continued unwarranted attacks on the First Family and the ruling party’s leadership based on falsehoods, saying necessary legal instruments would be invoked to put a stop to the practice.
Zanu-PF secretary for information and publicity, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said yesterday that freedom of expression should be accompanied by responsibility.
“The daily tendency by the independent press to malign the First Family and Zanu-PF leadership in general on falsehoods has reached unacceptable proportions,” said Cde Khaya Moyo in an interview. “None of their stories are verified and such conduct is most nauseating.”
Cde Khaya Moyo is also the Minister of Policy Coordination and Promotion of Socio-Economic Ventures in the President’s Office.
He said the journalism profession should be guided by ethics which the independent press had thrown out of the window.
President Mugabe, said Cde Khaya Moyo, had lately appealed to opposition political parties and the private media to respect the dignity and intelligence of Zimbabweans and protect the sovereignty of the nation.
“It appears there is an effort by these misguided elements to plunge this country into total chaos and anarchy,” he said. “These elements would bear the consequence of their actions. Unless this malignant mischief stops, these misguided elements will carry the cross. Enough is enough.”
Zanu-PF, said Cde Khaya Moyo, was busy preparing for its 15th National People’s Annual Conference whose Theme is “Consolidating People’s Power Through Zim-Asset.”
“As a revolutionary party, Zanu-PF has no time to engage anyone on falsehoods and political hallucinations, currently a major preoccupation of the independent press,” he said. “Let this madness come to an end for Zimbabwe is not for sale.”
The private media has of late been carrying stories aimed at discrediting the First Family and the Zanu-PF leadership.
The Daily News yesterday carried a story with a headline: “Resign now, Mugabe told,” based on an illegal demonstration held by a handful of MDC-T youths.
The same edition carried a story titled: “Grace allies go for Mutsvangwa,” in attempts to discredit the First Family and the party leadership.
