Canada-based urban grooves star Tinos “Slicey T” Viriri may have shifted more into music promotion, but he still holds deep passion for local talent.

Today, the versatile artiste will release a remix of his popular track “Ndiwe Wandinoda,” which was re-recorded by Rockford “Roki” Josphat, Blot, Hulungende, Madedido, Mr Attention, Kadja, Bazooka and Silent Killer.

Originally, the song was recorded 26 years ago by Lenin Chingaira, Gaylord Gwatidzo, Collen Sondayi, Allen Mpanduki and Viriri.

The track remains as wonderful as ever, with Temptation “T-Man” Chirenje of Mt Zion Music noting its enduring appeal.

In an interview with Zimpapers’ Arts and Entertainment Hub, Slicey T said that 26 years in the game is a milestone worth celebrating.

“You can’t talk about urban grooves without mentioning Slice Band, which rocked the airwaves back in the day when it was hard to experiment with urban grooves,” he stressed.

“It was very difficult to be embraced by many considering that we relied solely on radio and television to promote our music.”

He added that “Ndiwe Wandinoda” marked their breakthrough and remains a key part of their journey. “As part of our anniversary, we decided to do a remix of the song to ensure that we remind new generations how good our music was,” he said.

As such, Slicey T said the remix of “Ndiwe Wandinoda” will be released on Tuesday (today), featuring a fresh line-up of Zimbabwe’s exciting new-generation artistes, including Roki, Blot, Hulungende, Madedido, Mr Attention, Kadja, Bazooka, and Silent Killer.

Slicey T said the remix is meant to remind the new generation of how powerful urban grooves was before the rise of social media and artificial intelligence.

“The remix, which was recorded around the year 2000, symbolises a powerful meeting point between the pioneers of urban grooves and the Ama2k generation shaping today’s sound,” he said.

“It was a marvel working on this project, reflecting on the journey we have travelled over the years. As the executive producer of this track, I strongly believe it played a key role in bringing the project together in consultation with other members.”

He added that the remix was designed to bridge the gap between old-school and new-school music, while preserving the identity of the original song.

“Some of these artistes were not even born when we released the original track. Seeing them breathe new life into it 26 years later is truly special,” he said. “We are simply trying to show them how we did our music and how passionate we were back in the day.”

Slicey T also said he is grateful that they still have admirers for the work they did in promoting Zimbabwean music.

He noted that the chorus is performed by Roki, a personal choice by Slicey T, while production was handled by renowned producer T-Man of Mt Zion Music, who recreated the original sound identity while infusing it with a modern musical feel.

Beyond the project, he said he will continue supporting both emerging and established artistes through promotion, international collaborations, and opportunities for live performances in North America.

“Despite all that I have achieved, I still have passion for music production, which is evidenced by the remix of “Ndiwe Wandinoda Remix.” It stands as a celebration of a timeless masterpiece and a symbol of musical continuity across generations,” he said.

“In whatever I do, I always put the country first, since I was born to make an impression and change the narrative that Zimbabwean music is still appealing,” he added.

Slicey T, who has promoted several local artistes overseas — including Jah Prayzah, Killer T, and the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, among others — said he is determined to continue uplifting local talent abroad.

“It’s my duty to continue doing that, and I am determined to make an impression by uplifting my countrymen. As Zimbabweans, we need each other, and the best way we can all grow and celebrate our success is through such promotions that expose new talent overseas,” he asserted.

He also revealed that plans are underway to take Roki, Blot, Hulungende, Madedido, Mr Attention, Kadja, Bazooka, and Silent Killer overseas.

With the release of the “Ndiwe Wandinoda” remix, Slicey T continues to celebrate the legacy of urban grooves while championing a new generation of Zimbabwean talent — proving that great music can transcend time and connect generations.
