Slip lanes at two traffic circles complete

Traffic circles in Harare are being upgraded under the Government’s Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 to constuct slip lanes that allow traffic to turn left without entering the roundabout.

The slip lanes reduce congestion.

Progress checks yesterday showed that along Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Road leading to the Robert Gabiral Mugabe International Airport three slip lanes had been completed and are now open to traffic.

At Westgate, two slip lanes were complete including road markings, but the contractor was working on minor touch ups on the pavement edges.

At Kuwadzana roundabout work on slip lanes had started but tarring has been stalled by heavy rains.

Leengate business development and marketing manager Mr Eddie Charangwa said the upgrading of the traffic circles was progressing well.

“The one along Airport Road at Sorting Office is 100 percent complete and done. We are almost done with Westgate at 95 percent complete,” he said.

The ongoing Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme, has seen roundabouts being improved in a move that will ease congestion in urban areas.

The large amount of work done under the central Government programme has seen most arterial roads now fixed in towns and cities, with work progressing on the loop roads.

Meanwhile, Harare City Council has installed traffic lights at the intersection  of the Bulawayo road and Tynwald Road, an area commonly referred to as Maplanka, a move that has been received with mixed feelings.

Commenting on a Twitter post by the council over the traffic lights, Edridge Gambiza said: “Close off that junction, let cars use Warren Park and Kuwadzana traffic circles to access Bulawayo road from N Richards. Traffic lights will be worse than it is now.”

Another user by the name @DannyChax said the traffic lights would stop working after two days of installation.

“Check the traffic lights at Harare Drive and Kirkman Road. You can’t have stops in a freeway.”

One @gwarisam hailed the installation of the lights.

“Finally. This will go a long way in reducing accidents because it was a dangerous spot.”
