LESLIE Kashitigu does not look like a centre back.
Yet the Ngezi Platinum Stars defender keeps proving he belongs there.
The former defensive midfielder delivered another composed display on Friday afternoon as Ngezi held champions Scottland to a 1-1 draw at Rufaro.
Kashitigu is one of the shortest players in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
That has not stopped him from controlling the heart of a Ngezi back line that also features Gomezgani Chirwa and Praise Machengete.
Scottland arrived with an attacking line that included Knowledge Musona, Walter Musona and Tymon Machope.
Ngezi’s defence kept them quiet for long periods.
The champions only found a way through from the penalty spot after Tinotenda Ditima fouled Moses Shidolo inside the box.
Coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziwa has trusted Kadhitigu with the central role in a reshaped defence this year.
“It’s a role I enjoy,” he said.
“Most tall players think they will dominate shorter defenders in the air. I work hard to make sure that does not happen. I rely on timing and effort.
“I also admire players like Philipp Lahm. He showed that you do not need a big frame to compete at the highest level.”
Ngezi’s early form has come despite difficult circumstances.
The club are working under a FIFA transfer ban which blocked Mutiwekuziwa from signing new players.
“We registered enough players for the season so the depth is still there.
“Some of the boys are now getting their opportunity and this is their time.
“You can have big names and still struggle. A team that has stayed together understands each other better and that improves the way they play.”
