Bulawayo-born Amapiano musician and MC Peacemaker Mpala, popularly known as Smekalicious, is set to release his latest album, Inamba, on August 31 as he returns to Zimbabwe after spending more than a decade pursuing his music career in South Africa.
The independent artiste, who has carved a niche for himself in Amapiano and Kwaito genres, said he was now focused on reconnecting with audiences in his home country while building on the experience he gained across the Limpopo.
Smekalicious who was bred in Iminyela, popularly known as Number 1, grew up listening to Kwaito music. He was raised by a Christian family where music was an integral part of church life, an environment he credits for nurturing his passion for music.
He initially entered the entertainment industry as a Kwaito dancer before launching his music career in 2011.
“I grew up listening to Kwaito music with the likes of Mapaputsi, Kabelo, MaGesh, Zola 7, as well as Brown Dash, playing a role in inspiring me. I come from a Christian family where everyone used to sing in the church. That is where I got my love and passion for music.
“In 2011, I decided to go professional as a dancer. I did this deliberately because I wanted to understand the music game from a background perspective. After learning a few tricks, in 2014, I took a break from performing only to return in the game as a musician in 2016, as I dropped my first album titled Omapakitsha,” he said.
Smekalicious said Inamba was part of his efforts to strengthen his presence in Zimbabwe while bringing home the experience he gained during his years in South Africa.I
“Before dropping Inamba, I released an AmaPiano single titled S’groover Nabo Makhe, where I featured South African producer and DJ Visca. This single works properly as a teaser to my upcoming album because it reflects the kind of sound I will project on Inamba,” he said.
Beyond music, Smekalicious is into fashion designing, which he expresses his craft through his clothing brand named S/O (Smekalicious Omapakisha), which he said was inspired by his appreciation for his supporters.
Throughout his musical career, Smekalicious has shared the stage with several prominent artistes, including Oskido, DJ Vetkook & Mahoota, Mgarimbe, Bekezela, Platform One, Freddy Gwala, Vigro
Deep, Daliwonga, Shota, Drumpope and Visca, to mention a few.
