SO CLOSE, YET SO CRUEL! Williams denied ton in umpire’s call heartbreak

Online

SEAN Williams was just twelve runs away from etching his name onto the Trent Bridge Honours Board—but fate, and the umpire’s call, had other plans!

In a gutsy, stroke-filled knock of 88 off just 82 balls, the 38-year-old Zimbabwean veteran looked poised to hammer his sixth Test century and possibly reclaim the record for the fastest Test ton by a Zimbabwean. But with just 15 minutes to go before lunch on Day 3, disaster struck.

Williams, attempting a trademark sweep, was struck on the pad and given out LBW. He reviewed instantly, but it was the dreaded “umpire’s call.” And just like that, a golden innings was cut short.

With 16 fours in his blazing 114-minute stay, Williams reminded everyone why he’s still Zimbabwe’s main man in the middle. The Chevrons reached lunch at 141/3, trailing England by 159 after scoring 111 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the morning session.

So near… yet so far. Williams may not have reached the three figures, but his fighting knock has lit a fire in Zimbabwe’s follow-on fightback. The question now: can the rest of the team carry that flame?
