The latest edition of the Bulawayo Social Soccer League Founders Cup started on Good Friday with 60 teams taking part.
According to Ntandoyenkosi Sibindi, the chairman of the league, this year’s tournament attracted more teams than last year. This year is the third edition of the tournament.
The tournament is held to honour founding fathers of the league who are led by Chris “Zvidobidobi” Mhlanga.
“A total of 60 teams participated up from 46 and the tournament was staged throughout the western suburbs of Bulawayo.
All townships had a chance to host the first round of the competition,” said Sibindi.
After the knock out stage dubbed “wafa wafa” one team per group progressed to the next stage.
The 16 teams that are still in the running for the top prize will be back in the trenches in May for the round of 16 games, with quarter finals set for June and finals to be held in August during the Heroes holidays.
“Going forward we want to theme it in line with social issues such as campaigns against gender based violence, drug abuse, the girl child and civic issues that centre around community development.
We are looking for social corporate partners to walk with us in probably the biggest social soccer tournament in the land,” added Sibindi.
Teams that have qualified to round of 16: Edgars, Man U, Santos, Old Timers, Glenkara, Skippers, Stars, West Com, Mthala, Makwee, Siyabangena, Masters, Bullets, Magwegwe Wolves, 70 Combination, Celtics.
