SOCIAL MEDIA’s pervasive influence on teenage life has led to a concerning increase in mental health issues.
Depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm and even suicidal ideation are among the adverse consequences often linked to excessive social media use.
These negative traits have significantly impacted teenagers’ lives.
Social media often contributes to feelings of inadequacy about their lives and appearances. Constant exposure to edited images and idealised lifestyles can lead to unhealthy comparisons and negative self-perception.
Cyberbullying is another alarming consequence of social media use.
Anonymity has made it easier than ever for individuals to engage in bullying behaviour online. Additionally, social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram can disrupt teens’ sleep patterns due to their addictive nature.
While social media offers opportunities for connection and information, it is essential to address its negative impacts.
Guardians and educators should engage in open conversations about the healthy use of these platforms.
