SOCIAL protection in Zimbabwe must move beyond crisis response to become a developmental investment, a governance obligation and a human rights duty, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo has said.
He was speaking at the inaugural social protection week under the theme “Inclusive Social Protection – Every Voice, Every Need for the Future”.
Minister Moyo said the ministry is working to safeguard citizens from shocks, reduce structural poverty and build sustainable futures.
“This gathering is not merely symbolic, it is a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to advance a robust, inclusive and sustainable social protection architecture that ensures no one or no place is left behind,” he said.
“As we reflect on our progress and collectively envision the future, we do so anchored in our national priorities, guided by regional and global development frameworks.”
He emphasised that stakeholders adopt innovative, coordinated and evidence-based approaches that ensure no one and no place is left behind.
“A robust social protection ecosystem must address multiple, interdependent pillars of human well-being,” he said.
World Food Programme (WFP) Zimbabwe representative and country director Ms Barbara Clemence said social protection is not just a policy but a life-changing action.
“This is and must be a collective effort. The Government cannot do it alone. Today, I call upon the private sector to join us because social protection is not charity, it is an investment in human capital, in stability, and in the future of Zimbabwe,” said Ms Clemence.
UNICEF country representative Ms Etona Ekole said social protection is not charity, it is a right.
“It is an investment in people, in resilience, and in the future of this nation. In times of crisis, be it drought, economic instability, or pandemics, social protection systems are the lifeline that keep children in school, ensure food on the table, and sustain the dignity of families,” she said.
The event marks a critical juncture in the national drive to strengthen systems, empower communities and uphold the dignity and well-being of every citizen of Zimbabwe.
