THE Upper Manyame Sub-Catchment Council says all local authorities should make sure that their wastewater treatment plants are functioning properly and not discharging raw sewage into rivers.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Environment- Water Policy Dialogue forum held in Harare on Tuesday, the council’s water resources manager, Mrs Constance Matsaira, said it is not just the City of Harare that is polluted.

“I would like to call out all the local authorities. Local authorities’ jurisdiction mainly influences the Mukuvisi River and Marimba River, but if you look at the Ruwa River, there is a portion of that river that is heavily polluted.

“It is the Ruwa Local Board that is responsible. Then we have Norton area, there’s Norton town council, so it’s not just City of Harare,” she said.

Mrs Matsaira urged the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) to do more to curb corruption, especially in Harare.

“I feel like there’s a lot of corruption around, especially in Harare, resulting in deterioration of our environment and our river systems; issues of mining, wetlands and developing on wetlands,” she said..

“I feel there is a component of corruption that needs to be addressed so ZACC, I think should do more on that.”
