Sodomy earns city man 12-year term

Daniel Kachere Court Correspondent
A HARARE man Kevin Sirewa (26) has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for drugging and sodomising a friend. Trial magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa suspended five years of the sentence on condition that Sirewa does not commit a similar offence in the next five years. Sirewa denied charges of aggravated indecent assault but was convicted on overwhelming evidence.

The court heard that Sirewa invited his friend on August 1 for a drink at The Point restaurant located in the Avenues area. They had some drinks before proceeding to Harare Gardens for a Winky D show. The pair partied until 2am.

They hired a taxi and headed for Sirewa’s flat along Fife Avenue. Along the way Sirewa bought the friend a beer which he laced with an unknown substance. Sirewa later took advantage of his friend’s drunken stupor and sodomised him.

The friend was awoken by the assault and confronted Sirewa who apologised. He offered the friend a laptop and $200 in a bid to silence him. The friend refused and bolted out of the house. He alerted a security guard manning the flat.

The case was reported to the police leading to Sirewa’s arrest. The victim was taken to the Adult Rape Clinic for medical examination,
