A SOLDIER stationed at 1.2 Infantry Battalion in Hwange has appeared in court for allegedly assaulting a fellow imbiber with a log leaving him for dead, in an attack that has seen the victim being admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
The soldier, Learnmore Moyo, 24, has been charged with attempted murder for attacking Gabrone Ncube, 45, from Chidobe Village 5, just outside Victoria Falls.
Moyo was not asked to plead when he appeared before Victoria Falls resident magistrate Sharon Rosemani on Thursday.
He was remanded in custody to June 23.
Asked if he had any complaints against the police, Moyo claimed that he was assaulted by members of the public before they handed him over to the police.
It could not be established why Moyo assaulted Ncube who is still hospitalised.
According to the State, Moyo and Ncube were drinking beer at Chidobe Business Centre with other patrons on Sunday.
“On June 7, while at Chidobe Shopping Centre, the accused struck Gabrone Ncube who was drinking beer with a log,” said prosecutor Takunda Ndovorwi.
Ncube allegedly fell down and became unconscious following the assault.
He also sustained a deep cut on the forehead.The court was told that patrons and members of the public effected a citizen’s arrest on Moyo and handed him over to the police.
Ncube was rushed to hospital where he was immediately transferred to Bulawayo.
