Soldier steals from friend

A SOLDIER is in trouble with the law on allegations of stealing a cellphone and cash from his friend all valued at $1 257.

Fidel Castro Mambo (31) who is stationed at 3 Brigade Headquarters in Mutare, however, denied the theft charges when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, MrsYeukai Chigodora last week.

He is being charged with theft as defined in Section 113(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 and was remanded to December 8.

Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted. Allegations were that sometime in October, the suspect met Coventry Kapunza at Mhaka Shops in Yeovil where they started drinking beer together as they were friends.

“Mambo took advantage that Kapunza was getting drunk and searched him. He stole a Samsung S5 and a wallet which had $480 cash, a driver’s licence and bank cards from Kapunza’s pocket. He disappeared after committing the offence,” said Mr Karombe.

Mambo approached Simbarashe Gwamure who was selling the phone who told him that he had bought the phone from Moses Manzunzu.

Manzunzu was located and he revealed that he bought the cellphone from Mambo.

The cellphone was subsequently recovered from Gwamure. In his defence, Mambo said he was not a thief and that the story was being cooked up.
