Elsewhere in Chitungwiza, sculptors resident at Chitungwiza Arts Centre joined the rest of the world in celebrating Culture Week when they held an arts variety showcase at the centre.
A number of artists from the town including musicians, dancers, poets, actors and visual artists had a memorable day showcasing their talents in line with this year’s edition of Culture Week which is celebrated annually.
While the national launch was held in Bindura in Mashonaland Central province on May 19, other provinces were yet to hold their own events and Chitungwiza finally joined others on Wednesday.
Officials from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe joined hands with other officials and artists for the Chitungwiza celebrations which were marked by pomp and fanfare. And in line with this year’s theme: ‘Empowerment Through Cultural Initiatives’, artists led by world renowned sculptors Tago Tazvitya and Winston Nyekete, showcased their art that revolved around the theme of empowerment.
“We have always pushed for the recognition of arts and culture for empowerment because this is one industry from which people can make a living.
“We believe that culture and art are an integral industry that can contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product,” Tazvitya said.
His words were echoed by award-winning sculptor Winston Nyekete who said he used his art for cultural preservation.
“My vision is centred on my passion to preserve the identity of the nation through arts and culture,” he said.
Drama, theatre and music groups also thrilled members of the public with their activities which were held on the new stage that was built at the centre.
The Culture Week celebrations are meant to bring together diverse cultural activities for public consumption, provide a platform for the exchange of cultural ideas and views, promote cultural activities, goods and services that can be harnessed for national development.
The celebrations are also meant to bring the arts to the fore and allow artists and consumers alike to view the issue of empowerment within arts and culture.
