A DEFENCELESS 55-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by her son in a horrific incident that occurred in Pfupi village, under Chief Chamutsa, in Buhera, on Monday.
The victim, Daina Mhlanga, was stabbed to death by her 20-year-old son, Fadzai Mhuka.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the incident took place on May 19, around 11:30am while the victim was having breakfast with her nephew (9) in their dining room.
Mhuka allegedly entered the room singing “banga iro”.
He allegedly retrieved a knife from the kitchen unit, approached his mother, and threatened her with it, despite her attempts to disarm him.
“Sensing danger, the nephew ran outside to alert their neighbhour, Beauty Dambamuromo that Mhlanga was under attack by her son, who was holding a knife. Dambamuromo rushed to the scene with others, and when they called Mhlanga, she did not respond. They peeped through the window and saw her lying down in a pool of blood, prompting them to alert Constable Anesu Muusha,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said Constable Muusha arranged for Mhlanga to be taken to Birchenough Bridge Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
She sustained two deep cuts on the left breast, a deep cut under the right breast and another cut on the left forefinger.
Mhuka was arrested by community members, and a kitchen knife was recovered from the scene.
Thulani Mhuka (27) reported the incident to Birchenough Bridge Police around 12:30 pm, revealing that the accused person has a history of mental health challenges linked to drug abuse.
He has also been known of hallucinating.
“Cases like this emphasize the importance of mental health support and early intervention. We urge the community to take proactive steps in addressing mental health issues,” said assiatant Inspector Chinyoka.
The police are investigating the matter.
