TRADITIONAL leaders convened at Hauna Business Centre in Honde Valley for the NotInMyVillage campaign have identified poor parenting as a key contributing factor to the pervasive issue of drug abuse in the country.

The NotInMyVillage campaign, an initiative aimed at eradicating child marriages, seeks to safeguard minors from HIV and AIDS, as well as various forms of sexual exploitation.

Speaking during the engagement meeting, Headman Manyika Andrew Madziwachando cited failure to raise children properly as one of the greatest challenges facing today’s generation.

He noted that the older generation was raised with strong values and discipline, which served as a protective barrier against drug and substance abuse.

This upbringing, he observed, is in stark contrast to the prevalent issues seen today, where drug and substance abuse has become a rampant problem.

“One of our greatest challenges as a generation is failing to raise our children properly, leading to rampant drug abuse. Reflecting on our own upbringing, we were raised with values and discipline, which prevented us from indulging in drug abuse as much as we see today. We must introspect and correct our parenting approach. Failing to discipline our children is not a sign of love; rather, it is detrimental to their well-being,” said Headman Madziwachando

Over 250 traditional leaders, including chiefs, headmen, and village heads from Mutasa district, are attending the week-long sensitization programme.
