Songore leads Zim team

form in local and regional events and qualified for the Ukraine meet where he could be taking on some of the world’s best teenagers in the 100m and 200m events. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Songore should be travelling with Marvelous Ndebele (400m), Nyasha Mutsetse (800m), Ruvarashe Muzimbe (400m), Daniel Chidzavaenzi (400m hurdles), Tatenda Matesanwa (400m), Yvonne Vanhuvaone (400m), Shingi Hlanguyo and Sean Banda.

The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe have selected the athletes with the aim of grooming them for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Athletics coach Bright Nhumwa, who has been working with the team, believes the athletes have a fair chance of progressing beyond the first rounds of their respective disciplines.

“Our target is to get three athletes reaching the semi-finals or finals of their events. If by any chance we get a medal of any colour, then this will be a big bonus for us.

“This is a platform to prepare the athletes and we should note that it only attracts the best in the world,” said Nhumwa.
Nhumwa said the athletes have been given training programmes to follow ahead of their scheduled departure on July 8. The competition in Donetsk will run from July 10 to 14.

“All the athletes are still in school and it has been difficult to take them into a closed camp while we are also limited by finances. But we have given each of them a programme for training,” said Nhumwa. Songore, who is studying History, Business Studies and Literature for A-Level, believes he will use the event to prepare for the next Olympics.
