Sports Commission development manager Angela Nyaundi said they have been working hand-in-hand with the ZHF to draft their new constitution which will then pave way for elections.
“The federation completed amending the constitution and it has been accepted by the Sports Commission,” said Nyaundi.
“We are now waiting for the registration and approval of the constitution so that we can set dates for the elections to elect the new executive.
“Sora is now the headmaster at Prince Edward and (Amon) Madzvamuse is working on an acting capacity as the president of the ZHF until the next elections. There are some structures which are still shaky especially at provincial and district levels,” said Nyaundi.
Madzvamuse recently indicated that he was now the acting ZHF president and was more than willing to take-over the hot seat from Sora.
“In fact, I would like thank Sora for what he did during his four-year term as the president of the ZHF . . . He was a good leader and I learnt a lot from him while I was his secretary-general. In fact, we had a very good working relationship with him and I will continue asking or seeking his guidance whenever possible. I would like to reiterate that Sora is still part of the Zimbabwean handball family and that is why I asked him to be the guest of honour at a function where we presented Level One coaching certificates to Physical Education students at Belvedere Technical Teachers College in Harare two weeks ago,” Madzvamuse said.
The acting ZHF president also said that if he eventually becomes the substantive leader of the federation, he would strive to make handball one of the popular sporting disciplines in this country.
“The main task is to first have a strong junior development programme and then come up with good structures that will see us having a proper club system throughout the country. We want to spread the sport to all the four corners of the country and we can achieve this if all the stakeholders, including our sponsors, work as a unit,” Madzvamuse said.
The acting ZHF president is also currently working tirelessly to establish links and exchange programmes with the South African Handball Federation.
In fact, plans are already underway to send a number of local schools for a tour of South Africa in December where they will play in an invitational tournament in Durban.
Handball has of late become popular in Zimbabwean schools, especially at High School level, and the Girls High School in Harare, through their headmistress Beauty Mutsambiwa, are leading the way in popularising the sport in this country.
