Soul Brothers co-founder: It’s God’s plan!

SOUL Bothers co-founder Moses “Black Moses” Ngwenya has mixed emotions about his lifetime achievement award.
Black Moses, the only original surviving member of the legendary mbhaqanga group Soul Brothers, received a lifetime achievement award last weel.

The event was organised by Gallo and World of Music, Arts and Dance (Womad) South Africa to celebrate the rich history behind some of Mzansi’s most iconic songs.

Black Moses (66), who is also a legendary pianist from Soweto, told Daily Sun that one side of him is excited about the award, while the other side reminds him of the pain of losing his co-founders.

“Now I’m the only surviving co-founder of the group and it’s not my cleverness that I’m still alive, but it’s God’s plans. This achievement is not mine alone, but it belongs to all of us who formed the band. May their souls rest in peace.

“I’m happy that I’ll be recognised, and that recognition just reminds me that my co-founders are no more and I’m the legendary group with new members. I thank music lovers for continuing to give us support,” he said.

During the event, they also performed, sharing a stage with legendary jazz musician Lucas Senyatso.

In 2020, Black Moses was honoured with an honorary doctorate in philosophy by the University of South Africa (Unisa) for distinguishing himself in the music industry.
Soul Brothers was formed in 1975 by Black Moses, the late David Masondo, Tuza Mthethwa, American Zulu, as well as Zenzele Mchunu.

Soul Brothers was formed at Gallo in Joburg when the group called Young Brothers, made up of David, Tuza, American and Zenzele from Hammarsdale in Durban, joined forces with Black Moses from Soweto.

Gallo producer Hamilton “Vala” Nzimande heard them when they were just playing their instruments and singing together and asked them to do two songs together. They did the songs well, and their producer gave them a new name – Soul Brothers. (www.snl24.com)
