SOUTH Africa-based record label, Soul Candi DJs jetted into the country yesterday morning ahead of their two shows at Mojo’s bar tonight. The DJs, Andyboi, PM Project Cuebur, Wildfire, and Just Native are billed to launch Andyboi’s album Trail Evolution at the bar and also give revellers an experience of South African house music.
Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz, Zimbabwe-born DJ Wildfire (real name Stanley Dube) – who has his roots in Victoria Falls said he was not part of Soul Candi but was Andyboi’s supporting DJ.
“I met Andyboi at a club in South Africa early this year. We discussed issues affecting our industry around the southern region and he agreed to partner me on tours of the region.
“This Zimbabwe performance is part of that tour and it’s the first tour outside South Africa,” he said.
The 31-year old DJ who relocated to South Africa from Zambia in 2008 said though he tried his hand at various careers, his passion was being behind the microphone.
“After college I worked at a computer college in Bulawayo before moving to Mutare where I worked as a security guard. The love for music saw me migrate to Zambia where I then worked as a radio presenter and DJ at Zambezi Fm,” he said.
A visibly excited DJ Andyboi said he was thrilled to be in the country as it is his first time.
“As this is my first time in Zimbabwe, I want to meet up with local DJs so that we exchange notes on how to grow the House music industry in the country,” he said.
Wildfire said he enjoyed being a DJ as he could reach out to people.
“For me radio is a channel to express my love for music, to heal the broken hearted and to keep the lonely company. Radio is part of my life, in other words I am radio,” he said.
He said his role models were locals DJs Scott, Peter Jones and Ezra “Tshisa” Sibanda and South Africa’s DJ Fresh, who inspired him to be a radio DJ.
The DJ said he was seeking opportunities in the radio broadcast industry in South Africa and working on various musical projects with different DJs there.
“DJ Styles, Mbu Deejay and I are working on uniting African DJs to create one family of deejays. The aim is to help each other grow as DJs and exchange music, software and promote each other as music knows no borders,” he said.
He said he was planning to work with South Africa-based kwaito groups, Go Boyz and Achuzi.
