NGUBOYENJA-based sungura outfit Sounds of the Universe were on Saturday crowned the Chibuku Neshamwari Road to Fame Bulawayo champions.
The seven member group shrugged off stiff competition from seven other groups in a sungura dominated competition held at Manor Hotel. The group walked away $1 000 richer with second runners up Dakamela Super Sounds getting $500 and Ruzenga Super Stars bagging $300.

In an interview after the competition, leader of Sounds of Universe Ncengile Moyo said their win was a step in the right direction as it put them in the limelight.
“We founded our group three years ago but we have been facing a lot of challenges among them getting money to record our music and getting costumes for the group.

“We have been playing at beer halls in the high density suburbs but we would also want people in other places to get our music,” said Moyo.
The judges were faced with a mammoth task as all the groups put up stellar performances showcasing energetic dances that one would be forgiven for thinking they were established artistes.

Some of the groups that took part in the competition are Sesifikile Powered Echoes, Bavumile Super Stars, Chiraramo Boys and Mpfure Express.
Guest artiste Chase Skuza put up a great performance after the competition.

Last year, Facebook Brothers represented the province at the national finals.
The Chibuku Road to Fame was launched 2001 and is a collaborative effort between National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and Delta Beverages who are the sponsors.

The competition is meant to promote the development of the music industry through identifying and promoting music groups with the potential to produce and record their music.

Ten groups will battle it out at the national finals to be held on 28 September at the Glamis Arena in Harare.
